The Royale was designed to deliver loud and vivid clean tone with a remarkably responsive, tactile low end. A high-headroom, 50W tube amplifier with a powerful EQ, footswitchable boost, tube-buffered effects loop and glorious tube-driven spring reverb, the Royale captures all of the nuances in your playing, both on stage and in studio.

The 5881-loaded power amp in the Royale offers a choice of Class A (35W) or Class AB (50W) operation, as well as a master volume to control sound pressure level. The custom, high-power 12-inch BD12 speakers—also found in the Black Magick Reverb—feature an oversized ceramic magnet, top of the line suspension and a special British cone, resulting in rich, full articulation.

What Do We Think?

This amp covers a remarkable swath of territory. No, we’re not talking searing levels of gain on tap. Rather, we are talking a generous variety of feels and flavors for your cleans and light crunches. And through them all, the amp exudes the warmth and depth we love in a good tube amp.

Class AB delivers your more Fender-inspired sonic palette with a tight bottom, slightly scooped mids and vibrant top end. The amp feels snappy and punchy. Unlike many Fender amps, you have a perfectly-placed midrange EQ that gives you decisive control of the middle register. You can use it to fatten up your single coils or give your humbuckers an extra bold and creamy push.

Class A serves up your traditional Supro swagger. The tone is a bit more plush through the mids and the natural tube breakup occurs a bit earlier. The feel is a little spongier, but all in good taste. Again, the EQ section is nicely versed and lets you dial in any guitar you throw at it. While not as tight as class AB, the bottom end is thick and meaty and even gets a little gritty when you dig in.

In either mode, the Boost function adds a nice bit of saturation and character to your signal. It features its own level control so you can dial in just the amount of bump you want when engaged, without losing touch with your clean tones. This function greatly expands the foundation of tones the amp is ready to deliver. Add a standard footswitch to engage it on the fly.

If you wish, add a second footswitch to turn the Reverb on and off. This is super helpful if you want to dial up some of the lusher reverb sounds that the dedicated level and dwell controls afford. Go all out on your clean tones, but override the reverb with a footswitch during your more precise or overdriven rhythm parts.
