The '64 Super is a reissue of the iconic 1x8 combo made by Supro in the early 60s. With a single volume knob—and nothing else—the Super lets you hear the full tonal range of the tube preamp found in vintage Supro amplifiers. The purposeful absence of EQ controls in this amp’s original design eliminates the passive components that inevitably weigh down the raw power coming from the preamp when a tone knob is included in the circuit.

What Do We Think?

This American-made 5-Watt combo is remarkably touch sensitive, and we immediately heard the improvement of the Jensen speaker over the older 1606 model. It can take a Tele from sweet and soupy on the neck pickup to tight and biting on the bridge pickup. Standard-output humbuckers will start giving you the dirt right around noon on the volume. The overdrive really starts to saturate and sing as you turn up from there. One very impressive feat is that the amp has a nice colored warmth on cleaner tones and actually “tightens up” as you dial up the volume, rather than getting flubby and indistinct like a lot of other small combos. This is an exceptional amp for playing or recording with a big feel at a living room volume.
