Starr Guitars isn’t exactly a new kid on the block. For years, Kip Elder has been doing high-end finish makeovers and killer vintage restorations. On the side, he’s been doing custom from-the-ground-up builds for a selective clientele. As he expands his luthier business, Guitars To Be Played is proud to come onboard as a dealer and share the work of Starr Guitars with a larger audience.
What Does Parker Think?
The Tomcat is speaking my language. With a Tele-style bridge and two P90’s this guitar is extremely versatile and rock solid. The guitar oozes vibe and quality and has a ton of character. Between the flawless fretwork and the beautifully aged Seafoam Green finish, this Tomcat is the perfect guitar for someone who wants a fresh take on some old classics.
The Seymour Duncan Vintage P90 in the neck is nothing short of amazing. It is shockingly clear, with a wonderful brightness I would expect from a Strat single coil. I love how clear it is, but still has enough warmth and body to punch when you want it to. It sounds great clean, and is super articulate when played with or without a pick. It takes on an almost acoustic quality when picked closer to the bridge, making it excellent for rhythm parts.
Don’t let that distract you from the fact that with a bit of gain this P90 will absolutely sing. This Tomcat has come to rock! It sounds great for blues, rock, country and everything in between. The Tele bridge pairs extremely well with the P90’s, lending some brightness and snap to really bring out the single coil sparkle I love.
The Hot P90 in the bridge is equally as great. Similarly to the neck it shares the same bright character, but do not take bright to mean brittle or harsh as this pickup is anything but. Like the neck pickup the bridge also feels like a bolder single coil, with the sparkle and twang of a Tele-style pickup but with an oomph and fatness unique to a P90.
How Does It Play?
This modern C neck has the finish sanded off the back of the neck to make sure it always stays smooth and comfortable to play. The neck shape is very comfortable, and feels familiar to any Fender fans. The fretwork is stellar as well, and the guitar plays like butter up and down the neck. The string action straddles 4/64” at the 12th fret without buzz. The contoured heel is a great added touch and gives plenty of access to the upper frets.
The TKL hardshell case pictured is included!
