Starr Guitars isn’t exactly a new kid on the block. For years, Kip Elder has been doing high-end finish makeovers and killer vintage restorations. On the side, he’s been doing custom from-the-ground-up builds for a selective clientele. As he expands his luthier business, Guitars To Be Played is proud to come onboard as a dealer and share the work of Starr Guitars with a larger audience.
What Does Parker Think?
This Starr Hustler is a stunning example of what a double P90 guitar should be. Equipped with two of Starr’s own P90 pickups and finished in a tastefully aged Pelham Blue, this guitar is a perfect marriage of two classic brands. The headstock and neck profile invoke some California essence, while the appointments provide solid Kalamazoo DNA. The 25" scale length splits the difference.
The Starr P90 neck pickup is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine. It is clear and articulate, and was never too dark through the Bad Cat Black Cat I tried it through. When clean it's warm and cuts through nicely, with an almost Strat-like clarity. With some gain it has plenty of grunt to offer and never got too muddy.
The bridge position is also amazing. It has a beautiful sparkle when played clean, and felt great for playing arpeggiated chords and rhythm. With some amp gain it shines even more. It sings with even lower levels of gain, and screams when you crank the amp. The clarity and gorgeous top end are hard to beat, and it has sustain for days.
How Does It Play?
Starr shapes all their necks by hand. So you can go in knowing that the soft V profile is shaped to fit the palm perfectly. It has enough shoulder to fill the hand but is still comfortable for thumb-over playing. People can be intimidated by any shape with a “V” in it, but this feels great and is a very approachable shape.
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12 fret and nearly all the way down to 3/64” on the high E. And there is no fretbuzz. The contoured heel is an added bonus, making this neck supremely easy to play in all positions.
