Starr Guitars isn’t exactly a new kid on the block. For years, Kip Elder has been doing high-end finish makeovers and killer vintage restorations. On the side, he’s been doing custom from-the-ground-up builds for a selective clientele. As he expands his luthier business, Guitars To Be Played is proud to come onboard as a dealer and share the work of Starr Guitars with a larger audience.

What Does Parker Think?

This Hustler is a double humbucker delight from Starr Guitars! Loaded with a Seymour Duncan ‘59 in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the bridge, this Hustler is no stranger to tone. Finished in a stunning Black Diamond Firemist metallic finish, it is certainly easy on the eyes as well. Kip Elder has been doing great finish work for many years and this reflects that experience. The craftsmanship on this guitar is excellent and feels every bit the bespoke instrument that it is.

The ’59 humbucker in the neck has a very nice warm tone without ever feeling too muddy. It has a nice clarity even when clean, which is a quality I look for in a great neck humbucker. It feels very lively, with a ton of overtones when you add a bit of gain from the amp. I really enjoyed playing it without a pick, as I felt the sound of the guitar and my fingers came through extremely well.

The Pearly Gates in the bridge gives you all the grunt and fire you would want out of a great vintage flavored humbucker. It invokes all of my favorite classic tones, and is extremely versatile. The mids live in a great spot that’s pleasant to listen to both with some dirt and when clean, which for me is a rare experience. I generally prefer humbuckers with a bit of gain, but this felt great clean. It has a perfect bright sparkle that I love from a good single coil, but with the thickness and body of a humbucker.

How Does It Play?

The modern C neck is very comfortable, with enough meat to fill your hand but still comfortable for faster lines. The gloss finish on the back of the neck does not feel sticky like it often can on other guitars. It plays smoothly with low action up and down the neck, string action measures 4/64” on the low E at the 12^th fret and 3/64” on the high E. The final piece of the puzzle is the contoured heel which provides easy access to the upper frets.
