What Do We Think?
Snappy and clear are two words that immediately come to mind when playing this guitar. The thinline Pine body is loaded with Mastery vibrato and Lambertones Ristrettos under JM covers, completely satisfying any desire for clear and shimmering tones. But all that is accompanied by a firm and generous low end along with a sweetness to the attack on every note. And the whole guitar weighs just 6.6lb.
The bridge sounds this guitar produces are crisp and twangy, working well for both clean and overdriven tones. There's enough low mid that it never sounds brittle, but it also never gets congested. With a light/medium overdrive through a Fender style amp, you can nail the tone of 38 Special’s "Hold On Loosely."
The neck pickup is deep with plenty of musical clarity, bringing a P-90 as close to a Strat pickup as you can probably go. There is no muddiness here, and if you’re anything like us you’ll probably find yourself spending plenty of time in this position.
There are a few more tricks in the bag with this guitar via the 5-way switch. You have the ability to run the bridge and neck in standard parallel configuration on Position 2, or in series configuration on Position 5. Running them in parallel will scoop out some midrange while putting them in series will do the exact opposite. Both positions having equally useful applications depending on whether you want something that's chimey and refined, or loud and more aggressive. And we can't forget Position 4, which involves a roll-off cap on the neck pickup that sounds great with some overdrive or fuzz for searing lead tones.
How Does It Play?
We love the feel of the Medium Oval C neck. It feels nice and round coming off the fretboard but removes a bit off the back to keep it quick and nimble instead of chunky. The string action is only a hair over 4/64” on the high E string at the 12th fret, and under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. Tuning stability is superb with the Mastery vibrato returning to pitch every time.
