What Do We Think?
We've really grown to appreciate the Pine guitars we've had come through the shop, and this one is no different. Its sweet and mellow disposition is a great starting ground for a build, and complements the JM style bridge and tremolo very nicely. The softer attack of pine as a tonewood balances this guitar really well, rounding out the sometimes strident tendencies of JM trem equipped guitars.
You have a lot of tonal options with the Lambertone Ristrettos. A 5-way switch offers up the traditional pickup combinations plus both pickups in series and neck with a tone roll off. These P90's are incredibly clear and open, and although they read on the lower side in terms of output they definitely don't lack power or volume.
The bridge position has a really nice low midrange growl when pushed with an overdrive, accompanied by a pleasant sizzle in the upper register. Position 2 (traditional “middle” position) offers some incredibly 3-dimensional sounds, slightly scooped and crystal clear. Moving to some of the really cool neck sounds you can achieve, position 3 is just the neck on its own and its one of our favorite neck P-90 tones ever. It is clear and responsive, doesn't seem to compress as much as other P-90's, and overall feels like a great Strat neck pickup with a little more body.
Engaging position 4 introduces a roll off cap on the neck pickup which gets you into that really cool filtered Mayer lead tone, and is voiced differently than what you get by rolling down the tone knob. Lastly, throw the guitar into overdrive in position 5, which puts the pickups in series. This achieves some stellar lead sounds with plenty of midrange and a bump in volume.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this monster sets up nice and low without buzz. It measures barely over 4/64” on the low E string and under on the high E. The Mastery Vibrato is smooth and returns to “zero” just right, ensuring the guitar stays in tune throughout frequent use of the vibrato.
