What Do We Think?

While one look may say Rock ‘n’ Roll, in actuality this guitar has a warmth and sophistication well beyond its appearance. The Curtis Novak JM-WR pickups are Wide Ranges in Jazzmaster housings, and capture a sublime acoustic airiness in the mahogany body. The ebony fretboard on the mahogany neck provides the perfect snap to draw fantastic clarity out of every note and chord.

The bridge pickup borrows some of the bite from a P-90 and delivers a warmer top end than a JM-style pickup. This makes for a thicker bridge position tone that cuts right where it needs to. It handles gain very well while retaining a rich lower midrange and just the right edge on top. The middle position has incredible sparkle, a deep bottom and almost “hollow” midrange.

The neck pickup captures that big warm body that you love in a humbucker. But the midrange has a bit more room to breathe, and the trebles are more bell-like. This position delivers a colossal soundscape that is equally at home plugged straight into a clean amp as it is feeding a cranked fuzz pedal. And just to clarify, these pickups are hum-cancelling in all positions.

How Does It Play?

We have this beauty set up right at 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E. The slim C neck and deep body cutaways will allow quick fretwork all the way through 21^st fret.
