The Shelton SkyFlite brings a classic into a new age. Without losing the soul of its traditional brethren, this guitar packs some extra heat with its souped-up pickup configuration and wiring options. Still not the exact Shelton you’re looking for? What Do We Think?
Shelton has a way of taking what may seem like your standard "S" shape guitar from the outside, and creating something altogether unique and inspiring to play. This SkyFlite is no different! The Mahogany body, Curly Cherry neck and 3-saddle tele/strat hybrid tremolo only scratch the surface of what this guitar has going for it.
The Fralin Shelton Foil bridge pickup itself is powerful in tone, yet remains “vintage” in output like the other pickups. It has a bold bottom end and plenty of midrange while the top end stays distinct. There's a deep baritone quality to the notes, piano-like and very musical. With some overdrive this position reminds me of a well-EQ'd tele bridge with a little more meat.
The middle pickup is brighter and spankier. This comes in handy when you want to really cut and stand out, but also serves to dish up fabulous “in-between” positions when mixed with neck or bridge. Neck and middle in particular sounds lush and juicy, with a subtle touch of Strat quack. Bridge and middle is a bit more midrange-forward with a hint of clucky, iconic 2nd-position goodness.
The neck position is fat, nice and chewy but with a distinctly single-coil leaning sparkle to the mid- and upper registers. Certainly not to be described as bright, but it has a bite and clarity that a humbucker in the neck position would lack. This position really highlights the mahogany body with its deep low end resonance.
A push/pull volume knob engages the neck pickup with any of the other positions, giving you a superb neck/bridge option as well as neck/middle/bridge all together. The middle knob is a master tone, and the final knob is a reverse-throw volume to blend in the middle pickup in series alongside the neck or bridge (positions 1 & 5). This gives fat, wah-like versions of the in-between positions which sound really cool when pushing a fuzz or overdrive.
How Does It Play?
The string action sets up nice and low without buzz, measuring barely a hair higher than 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th and under 4/64” on the high E. Likewise, the neck is easy and fast… think a rounded C with a little material removed from the back. It features nice shoulders that let it sit just right in the hand.
