The Shelton SkyFlite IV brings a classic into a new age. Without losing the soul of its traditional brethren, this guitar packs some extra heat with twenty-one voicing options from its souped-up HSS configuration. Incredible tones in a variety of flavors. What Do We Think?
The ultimate flex machine. Oh, and flexible too. Both for studio and stage work, you’ll be hard pressed to find an instrument that covers more ground. It delivers some very traditional tones with its HSS configuration, but there’s more than meets the eye.
Some of our favorite tones are bridge/middle and neck/middle options in series, accessed via the series pot which masquerades as the second tone control. Roll this pot back to engage the middle pickup in series with either of the outer pickups, giving that quintessential Strat quack but without the volume drop or scoop in the mids. These positions are highly 3-dimensional.
You also have your choice of coil splitting to either of the humbucker coils. The bridge-most coil is accessed by pulling up on the master tone (middle knob). It features a baseplate underneath to beef it up à la a Telecaster. The inner coil is accessed via the push/pull pot of the third knob and delivers more straight-forward Strat tones. Choose either coil when mixing with the other pickups to find just the right blend.
Lastly, the neck position can be added to any pickup position via the push/pull volume knob. Want to run all three pickups together? You got it. But a personal favorite of ours is to solo the bridge-most coil of the humbucker and add the neck pickup alongside it for a tone that is spanky Tele on steroids.
The roasted 5A flame maple neck is quite a looker, dancing under the light and sporting a matching fretboard with subdued black dot inlays. The aged firemist silver finish features the most mild of relic’ing for some nice natural finish checking.
The Vega trem is a superb unit, melding the best of a Strat tremolo, Bigsby and Floyd Rose into one. While it feels quite traditional, it doesn’t pull out of tune as much as a standard Strat bridge. It bounces back to zero smoothly and immediately, and to exactly the same place every time. And like a Floyd, it allows for both dive bombs and up-whammies if you get the urge.
How Does It Play?
This guitar sets up effortlessly, with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without any buzz. The Oval C neck is slim and fast… think a rounded C with a little material removed from the back. It features nice shoulders that let it sit just right in the hand.
