What Do We Think?
This is one of our first forays into the Lambertones Ristrettos and we couldn’t be more pleased! Compared to a Jazzmaster pickup they have more low end and a tamed high end, without getting rid of the sheen. If using a P-90 as a reference, these have a bit more clarity and sparkle in the midrange. They are a very balanced pickup that interacts well in front of a variety of amps and effects.
The “rhythm circuit” area houses an array of unique tonal-shaping tools. The bass roller pot allows you to pull a little low end out if you find yourself needing to take up less bandwidth in the mix. The “cello” roller brings you to a sweet spot when you want to remove some presence for thick leads or and fly under the radar with warm, textured layers.
Perhaps the biggest secret weapon here is the 2-way slider switch, which engages both pickups in series. This is different from the middle position on the 3-way toggle which gives you your traditional pickups-in-parallel combination. The series setting packs a real punch, dialing up the midrange and pushing the amp harder. Where some guitars with the pickups-in-series option just get muddy, the Ristrettos stay nice and tight. Playing some slide guitar in the side? You will love this setting.
How Does It Play?
We have this beauty set up a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. We love the feel of the 60’s Medium Oval neck profile (think a 60’s C with a little extra removed off the back). The ash body is acoustically resonant and finished in a Firemist Silver lacquer with medium distress and beautiful finish checking.
