What Do We Think?
It doesn't get much more classic than a Fiesta red offset guitar, does it? This GalaxyFlite pays homage to the surf rock legends of the past while incorporating some much-appreciated modern spins. The Pine body is loaded with Lambertone Ristretto pickups hidden in JM-style covers. These dish out thicker and more well-balanced tones than a normal JM pickup, but can easily be sculpted back into traditional JM territory with the bass and treble roller pots if needed.
The bridge position on this guitar is crisp with a nice upper midrange that plays well with clean and overdriven tones alike. There's just the right amount of twang and articulation to the notes without being overbearing. The neck is open and dynamic, very sweet with a light touch and has just the right amount of punch when digging in to drive the amp a bit. You’ll probably lose some well-spent hours in the middle position; through a clean amp with just a touch of verb it is mesmerizingly dreamy and expressive. If you're looking for chime, there's plenty of it here.
Instead of the standard "rhythm circuit" found on most offsets, this guitar features a series/parallel slider switch next to the previously mentioned bass cut and "Sweet Spot" treble roller knobs. The series switch configures the two pickups together as essentially a giant humbucker. This setting packs a real punch, dialing up the midrange and pushing the amp harder. Where some guitars with a pickups-in-series option might get a little muddy, the Ristrettos stay nice and tight.
The bass cut is a great feature as well, allowing you to cut some low end out to make the guitar sit a little nicer in a mix as opposed to having to carve it out in your amp rig. The treble roll-off sits in a different place than just using the tone knob; we find it filters high end in a smooth, less dramatic way than the tone knob and is less wah-like in character as you roll it back. It works very well with a fuzz pedal, allowing the note to come through clearly even while the high end is being tamed.
How Does It Play?
We have this beauty set up a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E. We love the feel of the Medium Oval neck profile (think a round 60’s C with a little extra removed off the back).
