What Do We Think?
Let’s start with the Fralin Steel Pole P90 (aka J90) in the bridge… this pickup gives you a healthy dose of P90 bite and girth but in a Jazzmaster housing. It has a smooth top end and plenty of body when playing single note lead lines. This pickup pairs perfectly with the Fralin Jazzmaster pickup in the neck position, which delivers a tight low end and crisp highs with a tasteful amount of scoop in between.
The pickups blend very well in the middle position, delivering a shimmering top end and a balanced response throughout. The “rhythm circuit” slider is actually a series/parallel switch, meaning you can put both pickups in series for an expansive humbucker tone that adds a bit of punch and boost to your lead lines. It’s also a fantastic setting for feeding vast volume swells. Both the series and parallel variations of the middle position are noiseless.
Also featuring roller pots for bass cut and high cut, the electronics complement on this guitar allows you to pull an incredible array of tones out of the instrument.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up right at 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and just a hair over 3/64” on the high E. All without fretbuzz. We love the feel of the 60’s Medium Oval neck profile (think a 60’s C with a little extra removed off the back). Besides its fantastic appearance through the aged natural finish, the ash body imparts an amazing resonance to the guitar.
