What Does Josh Think?
Three different pickups in one guitar! This Fralin pickup set has all its bases covered. I’m always hesitant to say one guitar can do it all, but this one comes just about as close as you’ll get! It dishes out an abundance of tones and takes on a variety of styles in stride.
The hum-cancelling Fralin JM in the neck position is all Jazzmaster but a little smoother than your average variety. The “cluck” is still there but in perfect moderation. It’s a little bolder and a good bit warmer in the lower midrange. Add some drive with an amp or pedal, and it has a good throaty vowel on the bottom.
Switching on the Jag pickup alongside the JM has you thinking you’re playing a strat with the perfect compressor in your chain. It’s got that chimey, bell-like quality to it. Single notes have nice soul and nothing requires more than a light touch of the picking hand. You’ll also appreciate the fact that you don’t experience any volume drop the way you typically would with an “in between” position on a Strat.
The Jaguar pickup alone has no problem standing up for itself with strong output and a firm bottom end. It responds very dynamically to your playing. Finger picking sounds nice and sweet. Heavy picking or strumming brings out a brilliant clack that puts it immediately out front in a mix.
Mixing it with the Wide Range humbucker in the bridge gets you a good, dry honk with plenty of punch. You also have two varieties of tones here thanks to the series/parallel switch, located where you are used to finding the “rhythm circuit” switch on a traditional Jazzmaster. This switch changes the wiring of the coils in the humbucker from the typical coils-in-series configuration to the alternate coils-in-parallel mode, which essentially turns the bucker into two single-coil pickups in close proximity. This gives you a little more of that Straty quack and spank, right on down through the low strings.
The Wide Range humbucker by itself is beautifully bold and clear. The low end is warm and the top is crisp and dynamic. Make use of the roller wheels to dial back a little bass and treble and find that more creamy, midrange-prominent voice of a PAF style humbucker.
But we’re not done yet! With each of the pickups having its own on/off switch, you can turn on neck and bridge together for a bit of that steely character of a Tele in middle position. Or run all three pickups together for tones you might associate more with a mixed and mastered track than a guitar straight into the amp! All three pickups complement each other wonderfully, and the result is big, tight and nicely-compressed without any pedals or tone-tweaking required.
How Does It Play?
The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret, without any fretbuzz. The Medium Oval C neck profile feels wonderful in the hand, with healthy shoulders and a slightly-flattened back to keep it from every feeling too bulky. Shelton’s frets are always beautifully dressed, with nice rounded ends and a smooth feel as you move up and down the neck.
