What Does Josh Think?
I’ll let the photos do most of the talking in regards to the sheer beauty of this instrument. But I DO have to point out the Mother of Pearl inlays on the ebony fretboard. This is the real deal. You just don’t get the same look or variety of color with ivoroid or pearloid. The MOP is quite breathtaking in its own right, and the roasted master grade flame maple is no slouch either.
Tones and Pickups
The Fralin pickup set features a pair of Wideranges with a Jaguar pickup in the middle. The guitar is loaded with all kinds of tonal possibilities and thirteen pickup settings on tap. Each pickup has its own on/off slider, and there is a series/parallel switch for the Widerange pickups located where you’d find the “rhythm circuit” switch on a more traditional JM design.
The Widerange pickups are beautifully articulate and, exactly as the name suggests, widerange in their EQ output. They have a beautiful shimmer on top and a big bloom on bottom. Using the “cello” tone roller, you can dial in the woodier, smokier tone of a traditional humbucker or just take a touch of sparkle off the top. And the bass rolloff is a delightfully useful tool in controlling how the low end sits in a busy mix.
The series/parallel switch turns each of the Widerange pickups into a pair of single coils set in close proximity. This delivers a tone very much akin to the quack of a Strat in the combined positions. Turn on both of the Widerange pickups simultaneously for a big, sweet soundscape devoid of hard edges but with plenty of presence in the delivery.
The Jaguar pickup in the middle has no problem keeping up with the WideRange pickups on either side. Its strong output allows it to be sweet and shimmery under a lighter attack, or crisp and bold under heavier playing. And you can get really creative by selecting the middle pickup alongside either of the WideRanges, doling out the “cluck” of a Strat in spades.
Neck/middle is a particular favorite combination of mine. With the Widerange in parallel mode, this combo sounds just like a big, warm, juicy position four on your Strat. Switch the Widerange back to standard series wiring and you’ll find it brings the humbucker “forward” in the blend, adding an undeniable punch and compression much like a Strat run through your favorite compressor.
And lastly, switching on all three pickups simultaneously simply gives you “more”. It’s hard to describe, but it delivers a perfect blend of each position’s characteristics. The output is full, rich and smooth. Even here you have the two varieties provided by the series/parallel switch. All thirteen pickup settings are accessed quickly for on-the-fly adjustments, and there’s not a weak tone among the lot!
How Does It Play?
We have this beauty set up a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. The 60’s Medium Oval neck profile has healthy shoulders but a flattened back to keep it from becoming too bulky. It feels very supportive in the hand without slowing you down.
