What Does Josh Think?
This Ash-bodied GalaxyFlite is immediately notable for the resonance it transfers all the way through the guitar body and on to your body. That’s a character that many a Jazzmaster lacks. Whether playing a big open chord or throwing down a barre chord all the way up through the 12th fret, you’ll feel the liveliness of the body and the impact of the low register.
So with that as a starting point, let’s talk about pickups. The Lambertones Crema/Blondie/Crema set sports matching goldfoil covers across all three pickups, and each has its own switch to engage it for near endless combinations. The neck pickup is a humbucker with a beautifully-articulate midrange that will encourage you to spend more in the neck position than you might be accustomed to. You might even find yourself making use of the bass rolloff knob to taper off a little low end when everything else is just perfect.
Before we leave the neck position, let’s chat about the series/parallel switch located where you’d find the “rhythm circuit” switch on a more traditional JM design. This switch changes the coils of each humbucker to parallel wiring instead of series. Think of two adjacent pickups on a Strat, but even closer together. So you get a little bit of the quack but less of the phase. It could also be compared to a coil split, but with a bit more gusto and with very little volume drop.
And there’s real magic in pairing the neck pickup with the Blondie in the middle position. When neck is in standard series configuration, the tones are a blend of bell-like and typical “in between” position. Bigger body and more forthright attack than you’re used to finding on a Strat, by way of contrast. And with the neck pickup in parallel configuration, you get tones that are more traditional and clucky.
All the same can be said for the pairing of the bridge with the middle. The tones venture towards snappier and quackier. There are loads of good funk tones to found here, as well as great in-between sounds that hold their own for soloing and rhythm alike. Lastly, you can engage all three pickups together for a larger-than-life tone that is superbly punchy, but surprisingly articulate and controlled.
The bridge pickup is crisp and brisk, yet still a humbucker at heart. It sits very nicely in the mix to give your big rhythm chords the cut they need. You may also find the cello “sweet spot” roller to be just the ticket for dialing in (or out) the character of the top end exactly as required. Engaging the neck and bridge pickups together delivers sparkling tones with just the right touch of control and compression.
The Mastery bridge and vibrato do a remarkable job staying in tone, ensuring the hardware feels like a boon rather than something that gets in the way after the honeymoon period wears off.
We also want to make quick mention of the super flamey roasted maple neck, and the dark ebony fretboard adorned by mother of pearl block inlays. The real deal always has more “depth” and color variation than the pearloid knock-offs, and these are no exception.
How Does It Play?
This GalaxyFlite sports a generous oval C neck that gives good support to the hand and a slightly chunky feel with its lavish shoulders. The guitar sets up nice and low at just a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and hair under 4/64” on the high E. There is no frebuzz. The satin finish on the back of the neck is perfect for players who find a gloss to get a bit sticky.
