What Do We Think?
If you've never played a guitar made out of Walnut, let us assure you… you are in for a pleasant experience! This instrument exemplifies the deep, warm tones of this species and pairs them with the resonance and precision of the Mastery bridge and tremolo. Acoustically, this guitar has wonderful sustain. And upon plugging in, we immediately noted how big it sounded.
The Lambertone Crema pickups sound stellar. The bridge is articulate and open, retaining room for crisp and clean Jazzmaster sounds but also making room for overdriven tones that are warmer and fuller than you'd get with a traditional JM bridge pickup. The neck sounds are big and clear, not in any way muddy. Engaging the "Quad Coil" switch near the two roller pots puts the two pickups in series, providing a nice boost for solos with more midrange and volume.
Speaking of the roller switches, you have the option of engaging treble and/or bass roll-offs. Really cool for trimming a little low end out to make the guitar sit a little tighter in the mix or for altering the high frequencies to give you a rolled off "cello" tone. If a typical Jazzmaster isn't your cup of tea, this is a great alternative to check out.
It's difficult to see in photos, but the finish is semi-transparent and shows the figure of the Walnut underneath, which is actually quite flamey in places. We tried to capture this in some close-up photos. Indeed, the guitar gets more beautiful the closer you get!
How Does It Play?
We have this beauty set up with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without any buzz. Shelton’s Custom C neck profile has healthy shoulders but is slim and fast. Lean but supportive. The back of the neck has a perfect, silky smooth satin finish.
