What Does Ivey Think?
California Redwoods are some of the biggest trees on the planet. After playing this Shelton with its reclaimed Redwood body, it can be said that the tone it produces is equally as large. Give it a strum before even plugging in. This guitar produces a generous, warm low resonance with piano-like note definition. It is very enjoyable to hear and feel in your hands.
It’s also one to break the debate about whether tonewoods matter in electric guitars. The overtones dancing off the body and being captured through the Lambertones Grinder pickups are warm, musical and crisp. The way these pickups push the amp right to edge of breakup when digging in is just perfect.
The bridge pickup produces sounds reminiscent of a great PAF but with a dip in some of the frequencies that have the tendency to become nasal. The middle position sounds very close to the tone of the middle position on a 335, with a smooth chirp but with all of the flavor. The neck position is very clear and warm and compresses naturally when digging in.
The rhythm circuit on this guitar is incredibly useful; in fact it’s not a rhythm circuit at all. The slider switch changes the wiring of the coils in each pickup from series to parallel. This delivers remarkable tones similar to a single coil but without the volume drop of a traditional coil split. The two roller pots are treble roll-off and bass roll-off. The treble roll-off sits in a different space than the tone pot, and has a really cool Tony Iommi flavor when paired with some fuzz or overdrive. And the bass roll-off can be used to give these humbuckers a very convincing P-90 tone without all of the hum.
She’s quite a sight to behold, too. Roasted maple neck with master grade flame, violin burst satin finish on the body, gold foil covers on the humbuckers, and a classic black pickguard. And of course the stellar Mastery vibrato and bridge. Lots to love.
How Does It Play?
The guitar sets up with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret. The fretwork is excellent. The neck is fast with a smooth satin finish, and the fretboard has a compound 9.5-12” radius that allows for plenty of string bending without buzz.
