The Panther combines vintage tone and feel with uncompromising accuracy, playability and durability. The bass boasts an ultra-light body, 34” scale length, 7.25-9.5” compound radius fretboard, and a single Lollar P-Style split pickup with the option of adding a J-Style bridge pickup as well. With superb dynamics and a vast tonal range, this bass is all you need to sit just right in the mix with classic warm and fuzzy low end—once you pick her up, it’s hard to put her down.
What Do We Think?
Ebony fretboards are a favorite of ours for the balance of snap and warmth they lend to the tone of an instrument. Sitting somewhere between maple and rosewood, the definition imparted to this P-Bass is big and punchy. The Lollar P pickup is bit on bottom with enough bristle in the midrange to make a place for itself in the mix. The roasted maple neck is rock solid and just as reliable on the road as in the studio. The flame is highly 3-dimensional, swirling in the light as you maneuver the bass.
Speaking of moving under the light, this bass features Shabat’s colorshifting Cosmic Blue finish with matching headstock. From a deep metallic blue with hints of green, through a violet and on to a royal purple, you get all kinds of shades and hues as the bass or the lighting moves. Finished off with a silver plexi pickguard, this bass is just as much of a looker as it is a player.
How Does It Play?
This bass plays like a classic, less the foibles of a 60-year-old instrument. The spoke wheel truss rod adjust gives extremely easy access should you ever need to make a quick truss rod turn on the road. The medium C neck profile fits right in the hand like an old friend and sets up with string action hovering right around 5/64” across all strings at the 12th fret, without any buzz.
