The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Does Parker Think?
As a noted Strat-enjoyer this Shabat Lynx is right up my alley. The Lynx is an excellent example of a vintage-inpsired Strat with some modern features. The thumbwheel truss rod adjustment is the primary modern feature, since a typical vintage guitar would have a much harder-to-access neck adjustment. This is great Strat-style guitar through and through. It features a Swamp Ash body and a Maple neck, which combined make for a unique and more punchy midrange-focused Strat.
The neck position is the definition of the sought-after Strat tone. It hits hard and compresses beautifully into the Bad Cat Hot Cat I was testing it through. The Lollar Sixty-Four captures the essence of the 1960’s perfectly. It isn’t too scooped, but still provides all the Strat vibe one could ever want. With gain you can live out your bluesman dreams, but it sounds great across all genres.
The in-betweens bring on all the fabled Strat “quack,” covering all your Mark Knopfler and John Mayer needs. The neck/middle position is glassy and sparkly, with both Lollar Sixty-Four pickups working in tandem. The middle/bridge is quacky and sounds great for fingerstyle playing as well as rhythm, with plenty of chime to go around.
The Lollar Special S bridge has none of the typical ice-pick high end you’ll find in other Strat-style guitars, which I was extremely pleased with. This guitar with the bridge tone knob all the way up is bright enough to cut but is not harsh or brittle! And if you do want to tone it down, the second tone control is wired to the bridge pickup.
How Does It Play?
The custom fat V neck profile might sound intimidating on paper, but don’t be afraid! It’s really quite comfortable. It is full in the hand, but does not get in the way of your playing no matter where you are along the neck. It felt equally as good for chords as it did for lead, and just a bit of gloss was taken off the back of the neck to have it playing smoothly without any stickiness. This Lynx also features a vintage-influenced 7.25” straight radius, yet the guitar sets up perfectly with low string action of 4/64” at the 12th fret without buzz, even on heavy bends.
