The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
Besides looking absolutely phenomenal in all its Master Grade flamey glory, the 1-pc roasted maple neck adds just the right amount of focus without sacrificing any of the mojo. This guitar weighs in under 7.5lb with a lightweight alder body and vintage-style Gotoh steel block tremolo. Right there, you’ve got a great basis for a superb sounding instrument.
The bridge position on this guitar is closer to a tele than a typical strat, having just a little more meat and less unwanted high end thanks to the Lollar Special S. Overdrive sounds on the bridge are thick and punchy with no need for tapering the highs with the tone knob. But if you’d like to get some “cocked wah”-inspired sounds or just have to deal with an especially bright amp, the bridge position is wired to the second tone knob to leave your options open.
Moving to the Blondes in the neck and middle, these really are some magical sounding pickups. They respond very well to your picking dynamics, allowing for sweet and full fingerpicked sounds or glassy overdriven, bluesy leads. The 4th position is scooped just enough to offer that iconic spanky strat tone that we all love, while offering some great sustain for single note lead lines.
The 2nd position is very reminiscent of Ed King’s strat tone, nailing the verse tone of “That Smell” with some light overdrive on the amp. You get the quack but in a more subtle form, and perhaps a little fuller body than your true vintage 50’s pickups would deliver. The neck position offers crystal clear clean tones when left wide open, and handles overdrive smoothly with the tone rolled back between 7 and 8.
No shortage of tonal choices to be had here, and the Blonde/Blonde/Special pickup set is an excellent fit for the tonewoods of the guitar.
How Does It Play?
This neck leans on the slimmer side of a medium C, but still gains some meat up past the 7th fret to retain a vintage feel to the upper frets. The fret work and nut work coming out of Avi’s shop are simply among the best. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. And no doubt about it, the Master Grade Flame Maple on this one is at the top of its class.
