The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
This guitar is bold! The Lollar Specials are a big, gutsy pickup set. The top end is present but needs no taming. In this configuration of alder body with 1-pc roasted flame maple neck, there’s very little they can’t do!
The neck position is full and throaty, but the midrange has a dip in just the right place to keep it buoyant and uncongested. The dynamic range is broad, so you can coax many different flavors by playing with the weight of your picking hand. This pickup also stands proud through overdriven amps. From crunchy to downright mean, there’s no need to take it easy on your amp’s preamp section.
The neck & middle together is spanky without a whole ton of quack. Tight and compressed, yet superbly lively. This position sounds very open and articulate. Pick rakes come through with marvelous punch and precision. Double stops with clarity and expression.
The middle position is endearing in its “plainness”. Let’s face it, folks rarely take the time to write much about the middle pickup on a Strat. But there are times you need the cut… balanced with body… that the middle position provides. When other positions give you too much of this, or too little of that, you may find the middle pickup to be just the ticket.
The middle/bridge position is more midrange-honed that its neck/middle sibling. There is a power here that many guitars are not able to give you in their in-between positions. Whether looking for a nice gut punch for some clean rhythm tones, or the same on big overdriven lead lines, you can pull what you need out of this pickup position. Rolling the bridge tone control back will even take you into wah-like territory.
And while some Strats come up short on the bridge pickup, the bridge position on this one takes on the rest of the guitar in stride. With the second tone control wired to this pickup, you can get tones from rude and dirty to smooth and soaring. Sure, it can hang for some clean chicken pickin’. But you’ll have a real hard time stopping yourself from turning up the gain and letting this one rip.
We spec’d the guitar with a contoured neck heel to give you smooth transition to the upper frets. The neck is master grade flame of the roasted maple variety. You get that nice 3D dance of the flame as you shift the guitar under the light. And finally, the Seafoam Sparkle finish is one of our absolute favorites coming from Shabat.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. There is zero fretbuzz. Avi’s shop dresses the fret ends to perfection so they are exceptionally smooth as you run your hand up and down the neck. The profile is a ‘60s slim C, fast but supportive.
