The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Does Josh Think?
Chunky neck alert! This one really gives you something to hold onto. Not a baseball bat but a nice, substantial full C that measures around .88” at the first fret and .98” at the 12th. And I love it.
How much that big neck is contributing to the resonance of the guitar is hard to say, but it surely isn’t hurting! The Swamp Ash body is lively and gives you visceral feedback against your own body as you play the low strings. A bit raw and ready to rumble. And in true fashion according to the wood species, the midrange is clear and open while the top end is sweet and present.
We instinctively plugged this into an AC15-styled amp and let the chime blow us away. The guitar can compress a low wattage amp nicely, but keeps the flab in check. It stays nice and punchy. The neck position gives you a good thump on the bottom with loads of joyful energy in the middle and upper registers.
The neck/middle combo kicks out John Mayer’s “Vultures” with ease. Warm but gloriously clear and open. Dial to taste with the forward tone knob. The bridge/middle blend comes in two flavors… one with the bridge pickup in full humbucking mode and the other with it coil split. The former has a fatter, more robust attack while the latter gives you all the traditional Strat quack.
The bridge humbucker by itself is full and punchy. A bit woody even. The top end sings but with clarity, not brightness. And the coil split delivers a delightfully raucous bite with a nice bottom end remaining in the mix. And the rear tone knob is wired to the bridge pickup so you always have it at your disposal if things get a little hairy.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even a tad lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The gloss is intentionally dulled on the back of the roasted maple neck straight from Shabat, making it easy to slide up and down without any stickiness. It’s also quite a looker with highly figured flame.
