The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
The Swamp Ash body is resonant with an acoustic emphasis on a warm bottom end and sweet, mild highs. This guitar convincingly delivers the tones and feel of an aged, broken-in instrument. With its HSS configuration, this guitar is all quintessential Strat in positions 2 thru 5, but rock ‘n’ roll machine in that 1st position. The Lollar Imperial is beastly with gain yet eloquent in front of a clean amp, or with the volume rolled back on the guitar.
Position 2 coil splits the humbucker (slug side active) in conjunction with the middle pickup for the perfect Strat spank. In fact, we appreciate the fact that the pole pieces on the treble side are a little further from the bridge than on an angled single coil pickup, giving it a slightly rounder top end than you might find in this position on an SSS.
The Lollar Blondes in the neck and middle are 50’s-inspired with medium output and a gently hollowed-out midrange. It’s no surprise they contribute to wonderful “in between” tones. Position 4 is full, clean and spanky at the same time. The neck position is very touch responsive. Sweet under a light touch and coming out with some bite under a heavier attack. It even gets you that “glass” with the trebles boosted slightly on the amp.
The Gotoh 2-pivot trem is smooth to operate and provides excellent tuning stability that will encourage you to use it generously. The tremolo arm is precision threaded and fits snugly inside a bushing that removes the “play” in a traditional screw-in design. You’ll also find this design provides a larger range of “hold in place” than standard screw-in designs, so you can move the arm to the side if desired but won’t find yourself chasing it down after each use.
How Does It Play?
With a nice medium C neck sanded down on the back, this S-Style is ready to rock with a distinctly vintage feel. The fret work and nut work coming out of Avi’s shop are simply among the best. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and exactly 4/64” on the high E. From fit to finish, this instrument is the complete package.
