The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh bridge (either two-point modern or 6-screw vintage-style) with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. The Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS, HH, and HSH.
What Does Josh Think?
You know this one has to be good… Avi Shabat chose it to showcase at the 2024 NAMM show! He and the team certainly nailed it with this piece. It features a 1-piece alder body and 1-piece hard maple neck, perfectly quartersawn. It blends vintage and modern with Gotoh’s 510TS-FE2 tremolo, utilizing vintage saddles along with a more securely-threaded tremolo arm.
The Lollar Sixty-Four pickup set measures 6.4k/6.5k/6.8k neck to bridge, all Strat at heart but with a little more depth and a bit less quack when compared to some other prevalent choices. The neck position is full but immediate. The maple fretboard lends a perfect clarity to the position, giving a nice snap to the full-throated expression of the pickup.
The bridge position is crisp and powerful. The bridge pickup is wired to the second tone knob, so you can leave the tone up for some twang or roll it back for more “bark.” It will get surprisingly thick and meaty with the tone knob in the 3 to 5 range, while remaining perfectly articulate. And it’s not afraid of some overdrive. So crank it up!
The in-between positions are superb. As mentioned above, these are not the quackiest of all pickups. They remain balanced in both tone and output. The neck/middle combination is lush and juicy. It has more spank than quack. The bridge/middle position leans into the quack a bit more, but still without an extreme phasey/filtered sound.
Every pickup setting “warms up” nicely without losing clarity, so don’t be afraid to fiddle with those knobs. A personal favorite setting of mine is bridge/middle with the first tone knob rolled back halfway and the bridge tone all the way up. The combination of fat middle pickup and tight bridge pickup makes the middle register of the neck absolutely irresistible.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and just under 4/64” on the high E. The ‘60s Slim C profile has nice shoulders, making it fast but supportive. The 7.25-9.5” compound radius fretboard captures the vintage feel of the era, but still allows for a low setup and aggressive string bends without fretbuzz.
