The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
A perfect blend of vintage and modern, in our opinion. You get gorgeous single-coil warmth and chime out of the neck and middle pickups. And the power of the Lollar Imperial in the bridge. You also have a coil split on the Imperial (slug coil active), giving you those more traditional bridge and bridge/middle tones. But as a bonus, you’ll get a slightly rounder top end out of that slug coil than you would out of a standard bridge pickup on an SSS, due to its increased distance from the bridge.
While this guitar definitively speaks to you as “warm” the minute you plug in, it also has a subtle extra dose of clarity and punch in the upper registers thanks to the ebony fretboard. The neck position stays tight under gain and is superbly sweet for your cleans. Think a thicker take on John Mayer’s “Neon” tones. The Lollar Blondes have a nice rich lower midrange that never gets in the way, yet is always ready to support.
Neck/middle is eloquent on top but features a big, throaty body underneath. Full and spanky. The middle alone is beautiful in its simplicity and directness. It produces perhaps fewer overtones than the other positions, but sits just right to feed a haunting array of effects and ambient textures. And if you’re looking for a good bit of “cluck,” try bridge/middle with the bridge split.
And finally, that Imperial in all its humbucking goodness. It’s a touch woody, but lacks nothing for clarity. This is a pickup that responds well to the tone knob. It sounds crisp and tight for rhythm parts with the tone all the way up. And really fattens up and sings in the upper register with the tone rolled back slightly. It has no problem handling your drop D riffs across an array of decades.
How Does It Play?
With a nice medium C neck sanded down on the back, this S-Style is ready to rock with a distinctly vintage feel. The fret work and nut work coming out of Avi’s shop are simply among the best. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and a hair below 4/64” on the high E. From fit to finish, this instrument is the complete package.
