The Lynx offers a lightweight alder or swamp ash body, hand-sanded and contoured to feel right at home. Set in the body is a rock-solid Gotoh Fulcrum Bridge with a steel block to provide fat tones with no tuning issues and a great-feeling tremolo response. Its fast-playing neck profile is still meaty enough to keep the guitar alive, and the Lynx offers a variety of pickup configurations, from SSS to HSS and HSH.
What Do We Think?
Shabat really nails the HSH vibe. The Cosmic Amethyst Colorshift finish goes from rich purple to tangerine under the light. This guitar also sports a AAAA-grade flame roasted neck. The Lollar Imperial in the neck and bridge positions dish out meaty tones with excellent midrange definition and control. In positions two and four, the Imperials in conjunction with the Special S in the middle to give you some wonderful souped-up Strat quack.
The humbuckers coil-split via a push/pull on the bridge tone knob, giving you nine tonal combinations on tap. These positions provide a more nuanced relationship with your amp. The lower output and scooped midrange deliver beautiful spank with a clear, bell-like bottom end. We particularly enjoy the tone of the neck pickup coil split. It sounds really true to a traditional strat pickup, rich and organic for lack of a better descriptor.
The Gotoh 2-pivot trem is smooth to operate and provides excellent tuning stability that will encourage you to use it generously. The tremolo arm is precision threaded and fits snugly inside a bushing that removes the “play” in a traditional screw-in design. You’ll also find this design provides a larger range of “hold in place” than standard screw-in designs, so you can move the arm to the side if desired but won’t find yourself chasing it down after each use.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a familiar medium C. Fast but not overtly slim. The finish is sanded off the back for a superbly smooth and broken-in feel. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. The ebony board is the epitome of smooth under the fingers, yet will still please the folks who don’t care for the finished gloss of a maple fretboard. From fit to finish, this instrument is the complete package.
