Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.
What Do We Think?
This guitar delivers all the snap, punch and sizzle you expect out of a Swamp Ash tele. The 1-piece body sports a beautiful ’64 Jaguar-inspired “Target” Burst finish with the gloss dulled down just right. Right down to the pickguard, the guitar has a worn-in appearance and feel.
The Lollar Royal T in the neck positions adds a little “spank” where you might usually struggle to find it in a Tele. It’s very reminiscent of Fender’s Pure Vintage ’65 strat pickup… nice and clear with a little bite. But in contrast to a Strat, the steel plate of the Tele bridge beefs up the lower midrange a touch.
The Special T in the bridge position is hauntingly dry and honest. The top end is tailored pleasantly, yet has plenty of buoyancy before dipping off. The midrange is direct and highlights the immediacy of the swamp ash body. Both pickups respond very nicely to the tone knob. If you like to roll it back in your bridge position, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that this will translate equally well to your neck position.
The middle position is a bit of a barn find… a little woodier than we are accustomed to hearing in a Tele but still with the desired clarity on top. As such, it offers a natural extension of the other two positions. It’s a wonderful place to find locate classic rock rhythm tones that will clean up right from the volume knob on the guitar. It also happens to nail the tone on the intro of Brothers Osborne’s “21 Summer.”
How Does It Play?
The neck is a nice medium C measuring approximately .84” at the first fret and .95” at the 12th. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th and even below on the high E. The “Snakehead” headstock delivers smooth tuning, keeping the string tree off the B string and putting the strings in a remarkably straight line as they cross the nut.
