Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle bridge or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.

What Do We Think?

This is such a tonally balanced guitar. We plugged it in through a 22W Magnatone Twilighter (6V6 output section) and just wow. The Sugar Pine body delivers a bit of roundness and smoothness you don’t typically get out of a T-style. The interaction between amp and guitar feels more like what you might expect with a LP in your hands at times. The notes almost “stack up” with harmonic richness.

It may be a strange place to start, but let’s begin with the middle position. The combined effect of the Lollar Special T set in this guitar is hauntingly pure and beautiful. It rings clear and bell-like. The neck pickup alone is equally gorgeous, more chewy in the midrange with a throaty body beneath and clean top end. The bridge pickup is bit more dry and “direct” while still retaining plenty of nice midrange content. The oil-in-paper tone cap really gives a nice range to the tone control as well.

And then there are the ergonomics. The body edges are rounded more than on a traditional T-style, a simple touch but one that is immediately perceived and appreciated. The three-way selector switch is situated at a slight angle to make throwing back to the bridge position all that much easier. It’s a wonderful experience to play an instrument where all the small details come together, and we would put this right up there with the best of them!

How Does It Play?

The neck is a nice C measuring .855” at the first fret and .965” at the 12^th. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12^th, giving you room to dig into your string bends yet the ease to play fast and clean as well. Shabat guitars feature some of the best-cut nut slots we have seen on any builds. The strings slide clean and true, allowing the tuning to return perfectly from every bend and vibrato. The sanded neck also lends to a fast and smooth playing experience.
