What Do We Think?
Josh Ivey says this guitar is the equivalent of a dark chocolate. Ironic considering it features an Olympic White body and matching headstock, albeit a nicely aged tint of white. But yes, the comparison stands. We really thought this was a mahogany body when we first heard it due to the rich midrange and full bottom. It exhibits the darker, warmer tonal properties you might associate with a drop tuned guitar even when played in standard tuning.
The Lollar Imperials play right into that thick, smooth character. The neck position has a dry, vocalized bark with a nicely rolled-off treble response, perhaps best likened to the quintessential Slash neck tone. The bridge position takes on more snarl but maintains the body underneath. It sounds just as delicious on low string riffing as it does on upper-fretboard solos.
If you’re a Les Paul aficionado looking to get into a Fender-inspired guitar, this is your ticket. The tried-and-true Tele player looking for a familiar feel but a new tonal tool in the arsenal will find this guitar equally rewarding. The ebony fretboard that makes sure every note is delivered with just enough “bite” and clarity.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a good medium C, sanded down on the back for a perfectly smooth playing experience. While leaving enough room to dig in, the string action still measures nearly down to 4/64” on the low E string and splits the difference between 3/63” and 4/64” on the high E. The fret ends are smooth and nicely rounded. As always, the nut slots are cut to perfection, allowing string bends to return to “zero” every time.
