What Does Josh Think?

As the owner of the shop, this may be my new favorite humbucking guitar… and that would be replacing another Shabat Lion Special for the honors. The feel of a bound fretboard on a Shabat is superb, nicely rounded and really comfortable under the thumb whether you wrap around the fretboard or not.

The mahogany body delivers the dry “bark” you don’t often get out of a new LP-styled guitar. The three pickup positions of the Lollar Imperial zebra coils are perfectly balanced. The neck is warm and a little smoky, but open and articulate. The bridge is rich and full with spectacular bite in the midrange and a smoothly-compressed top end. The middle is spanky and tight. And the weight! This guitar barely pushes 7lb.

I’m also a sucker for the matching snakehead headstock and the Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge. This bridge is completely intonatable and sits very nicely under the palm; super smooth with no sharp edges.

How Does It Play?

The neck is a “Chunky ‘59” with moderate measurements of 0.88” at the first fret and 0.98” at the 12^th. I couldn’t ask for a more fitting profile. The back of the neck is sanded smooth. String action meaures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12^th fret and 3/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
