With a shorter 24.75” scale length and a Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge, the Lion JD is the brainchild of Justin Derrico (P!nk, NBC’s The Voice). It beautifully blends two of the most iconic single-cut guitar designs into one timeless, all-mahogany, dual-humbucker model, available in two stage-ready finishes.
What Does Josh Think?
While always a fan of the Lollar Imperials, I have to say they sound superlative in this mahogany neck & body guitar. And they have a lot to work with! The instrument is acoustically big and resonant while being incredibly easy to navigate. Comfortable contours and a simple master volume / master tone configuration keep your attention where it needs to be.
The neck position is amazingly clear and open in the upper mids. But impressively warm at the same time. It offers a bit of natural bounce and compression, never feeling dark or dull. It has an impressively lucid top end that lets the treble strings really sing through a clean amp, but is equally suitable for some seriously overdriven, swampy tones. Roll back the tone a touch to coax deep vowels very much akin to a wah pedal.
The bridge pickup is ferocious. Not in an aggressive, overwound way. But it bites powerfully to offer up thick, growling rhythm tones and roaring solos. While the mids are arguably too thick for a pristine clean tone, they are utterly irresistible through an amp kicked into high gear. This pickup also does really well at controlling your amp via the guitar’s volume knob.
The middle position delivers a surprising shimmer. It encourages energetic harmonics, sustained open chords and crisp arpeggiations. It is perhaps the position that makes your amp most closely mirror the acoustic qualities of the guitar. But each pickup position is perfectly balanced to the others, and each is likely to get equal play time!
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even a tad lower on the high E. This guitar is definitely ready to rip. It features a medium C neck profile with healthy shoulders to make it both fast and supportive in the hand, and a 12” fretboard radius that allows aggressive string bends without buzz.
