Our Lion Deluxe model is all about options and big, heavy tone. Select a mahogany body with a pair of Lollar P-90s, an alder body equipped with a pair of Lollar humbuckers, or a blend of the two pickup options—the choice is yours. The Lion Deluxe comes complete with a nice tummy cut for comfort and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup for the ultimate tonal control.
What Do We Think?
For starters, it’s a perfect shade of Sherwood. But on to the important parts… this Alder-bodied beauty weighs under 7.5lb but delivers meaty tones thanks to a Lollar P-90 in the neck and Imperial in the bridge. It features a roasted flame maple neck topped with a slab rosewood fingerboard and one of the finest-looking tort pickguards we’ve seen on a new build.
The P-90 tones in the neck position are thick and swampy, with a little less compression than a neck humbucker and an extra airiness and clarity in the upper midrange and highs. It is very touch-sensitive in front of an amp, showing a sweet side with a soft touch and taking on a rich, bluesy bite the harder you dig in. The Imperial humbucker in the bridge really sings, with a frequency spectrum that is a little more focused than the neck position but perfectly complementary. It retains a nice zing due to its proximity to the bridge, but balances that with the smooth, rounded bark that the Imperial does so well.
Not one to merely imitate, Avi Shabat has incorporated a number of small touches that make all the difference on this guitar. It features a traditional skunk stripe and heel adjust truss rod, but utilizes a spoke wheel (think EVH or Ernie Ball) so that you never need to remove the neck. The body edges are rounded over more gently than a traditional T-style, a detail you’ll note and appreciate the moment you swing your arm over it. Even the pickguard edges are nicely rounded, and Avi is using nice thick stock that bears a distinctly vintage look. Avi has delivered a guitar that anticipates the needs of the guitarist in ways few others have.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a good C, starting at 0.845” at the 1st fret and building to 0.955” at the 12th. The back is sanded down perfectly smooth. The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E and 3/64” on the high E (12th fret) without a hint of buzz. The fret ends are smooth and nicely rounded. The nut slots are cut to perfection, truly some of the best we’ve seen, allowing string bends to return to “zero” every time.
