Our Lion Deluxe model is all about options and big, heavy tone. Select a mahogany body with a pair of Lollar P-90s, an alder body equipped with a pair of Lollar humbuckers, or a blend of the two pickup options—the choice is yours. The Lion Deluxe comes complete with a nice tummy cut for comfort and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup for the ultimate tonal control.
What Do We Think?
Aside from the obvious Tuxedo-inspired touches, this guitar truly imparts a healthy dose of Black Beauty specs and tones. It features a mahogany body loaded with a Lollar P-90 in neck and Imperial in bridge… best of both worlds of the early-to-mid ‘50s Gibbys and their ‘60s humbucker-equipped counterparts. Yet with its 25.5” scale neck, it’s unmistakably Fender too.
The Lollar P-90 in the neck has a chewy quality that exudes the warmth of the mahogany body. But it does so with an airiness and openness that you wouldn’t find in a humbucker. It manages to stay clear and edgy when the overdrive gets cranked, even a bit rude.
The Imperial in the bridge has a subtle honk and a lively response across the entire frequency spectrum of the guitar. Again, really capturing the best of the mahogany body. The low end chugs, the midrange bites and the top end sings clear as a bell. There is even a coil split available via the push/pull pot on the pickup’s dedicated tone pot.
The middle position is more full and unfiltered than what you typically get on a dual humbucker guitar. The two pickups complement each other and the qualities of each come through loud and clear when paired together. For a spankier tone, coil split the bridge and enjoy the crisp single coil tones supported by the depth of the neck P-90.
From a cosmetic standpoint, this baby has it all. Ebony fretboard and block inlays. Flame roasted maple neck. Body binding and gold hardware. Functionally, you’ll also enjoy Avi’s nuanced touches like smoothly radiused pickguard edges and perfectly rounded fret ends.
How Does It Play?
The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and even lower on the high E. there is no fretbuzz. The neck splits the difference between ‘50s and ‘60s era LP’s with a nice medium C measuring about .084” at the first fret and .095” at the 12th.
