What Does Josh Think?
1-piece Swamp Ash body. Vibrant 3-tone sunburst finish paired with deep tortoise pickguard. Roasted flame maple neck. Dark rosewood fretboard, aged pearloid blocks. And a set of Lollar pickups featuring a Low Wind Regal in the neck and Vintage T in the bridge. All at just 6lb 9.5oz.
That’s the guitar on paper! And those are impressive stats indeed. But the real magic is in the tones. Lollar Regals have a wonderful bluesy bent to our ears. The Low Wind variant is no exception, but what we really like about this pickup is that it cleans up some of the bottom end of the standard wind. Operated with the volume and tone fully up, the pickup has a fantastic bite that can deliver pithy lead lines without losing the meat underneath. With the volume rolled back about 10%, it sounds very traditional PAF with a familiar warm, rounded attack and smooth midrange.
The Vintage T in the bridge covers everything from Nashville twang to British rock ‘n’ roll depending on the position of the tone knob. With independent volume and tone controls for each pickup, you can really set the tones to be ready-on-the-go as you flip through the pickup positions. A personal favorite setting of mine is to run the bridge tone back about 30%, with the aforementioned neck volume down about 10%. The volumes between the two pickups balance very nicely here, and you get an amazing variety of tones that can be tweaked to taste with the knobs as you go.
The middle position tracks wonderfully with those tweaks of the knobs as well. You may want to try it first with both volumes and tones all the way up to see what it can do. The mixture of rich, mildly compressed neck pickup and tight, articulate bridge is an exceptional combination. It sounds a little like the middle position on a dual humbucker guitar but the individual voices of the pickups are much more distinct. It is also remarkably expressive as you vary your pick attack, becoming even more transparent as you lighten up in your picking hand.
How Does It Play?
Shabat’s medium C adds a little meat on a Fender modern C without feeling chunky or cumbersome. The back of the neck has a bit of the gloss taken off for a really smooth, satin-like feel. The string action measures 4/64” at the 12th across all strings without buzz. One thing clients constantly remark on with Shabat Guitars is their incredible fret dressing. And we couldn’t agree more. They feature some of most nicely-rounded fret ends you’ll find anywhere.
