The Lion Custom pays homage to early 1970s guitar design, combining Lollar’s Regal humbucker with their J Street single coil bridge pickup to deliver not only bite, but roar, in the same instrument. Choose alder or swamp ash, pair it with maple or rosewood, and if you want to… paint it black.
What Do We Think?
This is a guitar that deserves equal attention in all three pickup positions. Let’s do the unheard-of and start with the middle position. It delivers a perfect balance of warm body and sweet presence. Listen to the clean guitar intro on “21 Summer” by Brothers Osbourne to get the idea. The pairing of the Regal and J-Street has a subtle scoop and an amazing sparkle.
The Regal by itself in the neck position is warm but with a little more clarity in the midrange than your traditional humbucker. It has a mild chime to it, but not such that it loses the depth you desire when switching to the neck.
The bridge delivers a bite that is a little more thick and compressed than your average T-style. The J-Street keeps up with the Regal in the neck no problem and handles gain very nicely. With the 4-knob layout you can even have the tone dialed back a bit just on the bridge pickup alone if you want to dial in more P90-esque tones.
And the weight! Just under 7lb for an alder body T-style. Quite phenomenal.
One thing we always marvel about with the Shabats is the feel. Perfect fret dressing and sanded down neck aside, the guitar has the feel of one of the “good ones”. In other words, like a vintage instrument that merited a lot of play time. The natural resonant peak of the instrument lies in a lower, richer register when compared to the “tight” and stiff character that many other new builds fall prey to.
How Does It Play?
Shabat’s medium C leaves little room to desire anything else. As a point of comparison, it adds a little meat on a Fender modern C without feeling chunky or cumbersome. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th, giving you room to dig into your string bends yet the ease to play fast and clean as well. Shabat guitars feature some of the best-cut nut slots we have seen on any builds. The strings slide clean and true, allowing the tuning to return perfectly from every bend and vibrato.
