The Lion Custom pays homage to early 1970s guitar design, combining Lollar’s Regal humbucker with a single coil bridge pickup to deliver not only bite, but roar, in the same instrument. Choose alder or swamp ash, pair it with maple or rosewood, and if you want to… paint it black.
What Does Josh Think?
This guitar will knock your socks off! From the uber-resonant alder body to the Master Grade flame of the neck, from the Bigsby to the Lollar BS bridge pickup that don’t take no BS, this is an astounding instrument. We did our best to capture that Seafoam Sparkle finish but when you really see it under the light… well we’ll leave that for you to find out.
With independent volume and tone controls for each pickup, you have loads of options under your fingertips. But truth be told, I enjoyed running all the knobs fully up! The Lollar Regal in the neck and the BS in the bridge are a PERFECT pair. The BS is “pure” but powerful. It doesn’t have the midrange hump of a humbucker but it is just as impactful. It doesn’t hurt that it has the full resonance of the Callaham bridge and Bigsby behind it!
The Regal in the neck does the warm neck ‘bucker thing but with a bit more enunciation to the midrange. I hear a bluesy bite when digging in. But it is a very expressive neck position; you can go from mild to menace just by varying your pick attack. And the pickup never loses clarity regardless of your approach.
Avi’s work on nut slots is always a favorite quality of ours, and the Bigsby really brings this to light. Bad nut slots very quickly equate to a troublesome Bigsby. But the tuning is completely solid on this one even through rather aggressive use of the tremolo. The Callaham bridge and intonated brass saddles are phenomenal as well.
How Does It Play?
The neck measures .855" at the first fret and .965" at the 12th. That’s just a hair deeper than the average Shabat medium C and we really like it. It’s round and full. The 1-piece Master Grade flame maple neck is very 3-dimensional under the light as you move it around. But we digress. Setup specs… hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings without buzz
