What Does Parker Think?
This Novo Voltur oozes vibe. The combination of the Lollar Staple P90 in the neck and Fralin Unbucker in the bridge is a unique blend that can cover a ton of ground. The Tele-style cut bridge with brass saddles also lends a unique character to this guitar and adds a nice bit of warmth.
The Lollar Staple P90 in the neck position sounds fantastic. It has a very pleasant brightness like you’d expect from a single coil, but with the girth and punch of a humbucker. It has a ton of clarity and character that will cover everything from jazz to soaring epic leads. The Staple P90 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine for its sparkle and midrange punch.
The Fralin Unbucker in the bridge is a do-it-all humbucker complete with a great sounding coil split. Want it to rock? Crank up some gain and this pickup will push your amp into overdriven gooodness. Want it to twang? Split the coils and you’ll be boot scooting with the best of ‘em, especially with the Tele-style bridge. It has energy in all the right places—never too bright or brash—and has a perfect midrange to cut through a mix without sounding honky.
My personal favorite is the middle position though. The blend of the Staple P90 and the Unbucker is truly something special. It actually sounds like the guitar does unplugged. It takes on a brilliant acoustic quality that’s perfect for strumming rhythm, playing tight funk lines, or imitating the middle position on a Tele.
How Does It Play?
The chunky C neck shape might sound intimidating, but in reality is quite inviting. It fills out the hand nicely in the cowboy chord area but leaves room as you travel up the neck. You can pull off even the most complicated lines with ease. The 9.5-14” radius helps with this as well, as it allows for a nice low setup without any buzz even on the upper frets. In fact, the string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and all the way down to 3/64” on the high E.
