What Do We Think?
This one-of-a-kind Novo Voltur is stunning in its looks… both classic and unique… and in its variety of specialized options. The tempered Pine body is finished in a Faded Cherry nitro and looks awesome paired with the gold hardware and covered Lindy Fralin pickups. Top it off with a roasted maple neck and rosewood fretboard, and you’ll find a well-balanced tonal resonance throughout this build.
The combination of woods on this guitar really make for a special resonance even when its not plugged in. It is reminiscent of an old slab body mahogany guitar in its response. It has a dry, warm low end that can be felt in your chest. Highs are shimmery with a distinct sweetness. We really like what the chopped tele bridge adds to the tonal equation, tightening and refining the extremities of the EQ spectrum.
When it’s time to plug in and turn up, you’ll be tempted to go straight for the Lindy Fralin Unbucker in the bridge position. It has a thick lower midrange with a bump in the upper mids that helps it cut really well. The output leans vintage at around 8.5k, open and balanced without any nasal character.
The pickup relies on unbalanced coils to achieve a superb coil split tone. One coil is overwound and the other underwound, to maintain that classic humbucker tone described above. But when engaging the coil split via the push/push tone knob, the overwound coil is selected to give you full-bodied single coil tones with very little volume drop.
In the neck position, this is our first experience with the Fralin Firebird pickup and we really dig it. It has all the chimey goodness you'd expect out of a Firebird, but feels more rounded than others. It has a big low end that doesn't get muddy, and the top end is clear but not too bright.
The neck and bridge pickups complement each other well. You also get two versions of the middle position, one with bridge split and one with bridge fully humbucking. With the contribution of the humbucker, the middle position is dreamy and piano-like with just the right amount of natural compression. With the bridge split, the middle position is more curt and snappy, perfect for funky rhythm work.
How Does It Play?
The Chunky C neck definitely has a Gibson vibe going on. It fills out the hand nicely without slowing you down. The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and a touch below 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The fret ends are perfectly rounded and the neck feels incredibly smooth as you move up and down the fingerboard.
