This one also features Lollar Firebird pickups, made possible as a Limited Run of guitars exclusive to Guitars To Be Played. This guitar is not only versatile but also inspiring.

A quick plug into a Magnatone Twilighter 22W combo confirmed our impressions when strumming unplugged; this guitar exhibits a full and resonant bottom end. Yet the Firebird pickups dial it in perfectly with their brighter quality, preventing it from becoming boomy or dark even on the neck pickup. This position stays open and articulate.

The bridge pickup is strong and aggressive with volume and tone rolled up, and rolls off to be sweet and more compressed with the controls dialed back. Compared to a single coil in a bridge position, the Firebird delivers a bolder and rounder punch. And it is hum-cancelling all the way. The volume and tone pots have a great taper, allowing both pickups to be extremely versatile.

How Does It Play?

We spec’d this build with a 24.75” scale and jumbo frets for a modern Gibson-esque feel. The Medium C neck fits neatly between a ‘50s and ‘60s profile. Block inlays adorn a dark rosewood fretboard with a 9.5-14” compound radius, allowing even aggressive bends without fret buzz on the upper frets. The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12^th fret.
