What Does Josh Think?

I’ve been looking forward to hearing the Gold Foils in a Miris J build, and they do not disappoint. They have a hi-fi sparkle, but are full of character in the lower registers as well. They are a clean players dream. But in the semi-hollow body, they do a delicious swampy thing just as well.

The neck pickup has a rich midrange. Not the first thing you think of when you think clear and sparkly. But somehow this pickup does it all. It’s throaty and has enough power to get a tube amp cooking if you dig in. It can go from smooth to stinging all depending on what you put in. But never muddy.

The middle position has a pure, acoustic quality and an effortless balance across the EQ spectrum. Anything you would play on an acoustic guitar translates perfectly to this position. Just easier. The middle register is uncluttered but punchy. Lows are deep and highs are sweet.

The bridge pickup has a slight out-of-phase Strat sound. Not sure how they packed that into a single pickup. It has a mild honk from which it derives its strength. It’s juicy, and it’s a lot thicker than a Strat bridge. But nonetheless there’s a familiarity that will draw you to your favorite Strat licks.

How Does It Play?

The neck starts off feeling like a perfect ‘60s oval C and stays in that mold until around the 7^th fret, where it starts to fill out as a rounder C. Very comfortable. Low string action, no buzz. It’s all that.
