Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Daniel Think?
A true tool for the working musician. At 5lbs 14oz, you won’t have any problems standing and playing for hours on the gig. This Tele is warm and clear. The Budz 543 pickup set dishes out everything you need to get the job done but none of those offensive high frequency artifacts that sometimes come with the territory of playing Telecasters. David Budz winds and builds his pickups with the materials, wire gauge, coating and procedure of the great pickups from the 50’s. This set features a mixture of Alnico 5, 4, and 3 magnets in the bridge pickup to carefully tame those icepick trebles while maintaining a complex midrange and the right amount of sparkle. Paired perfectly with the Alnico 5 magnet in the neck.
This guitar reminded us of some of the great jazz and soul players who chose the telecaster to be their musical voice—players like Cornel Dupree, Ted Greene, Mike Stern, and Oscar Moore among others. But it can also rock. Perhaps the vintage yellow-amber finish is no coincidence. Even the guys at Mario Martin referred to it as the Bruce Springsteen tele when we picked it up. But fan or not, we’re pretty sure you will dig the appearance and tone of this guitar equally.
How Does It Play?
Mario guitars are dialed in perfectly by the builders, and they’re just down the road so the guitars really don’t even go through any environment change from their shop to ours. But we still do our due diligence just as on every other guitar we sell, making sure we are familiar with the guitar on a personal level and giving one more test of every component and a final check on the setup before shipping. But to sum it up in just a few words, playing a Martin Martin guitar is simultaneously effortless and electrifying.
