Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This T-style is the perfect blend of clarity, warmth and charm. With a Lollar A3 pickup set, resonant Swamp Ash body and snappy roasted maple neck, the magic is in the sum of the ingredients. We should also mention that the sum total of all the parts weighs just 6lb 6oz!
The neck position has a rich, throaty vowel. Not one that supersedes the guitar’s acoustic-like clarity. But just a little “chew” on the notes that really shows up when you dig in on bluesy lines. A softer attack will highlight the purity and open EQ of the A3 magnets, so the pickup works just as well for laying down expansive chord work.
The bridge has a touch of honk. Nothing nasal, but there’s a little bit of the raw energy you get with a P-90. In fact, if you roll down the tone knob you can muster some pretty convincing LP Jr. tones. And this pickup does sound fantastic across a broad sweep of the tone knob, say 30% to fully up. It also sounds remarkable with a good bit of drive, just as much as a perfectly clean amp.
The middle position has exceptional sparkle, with a bit of a steely punch that holds true to its Tele lineage. Each note is bold and self-sufficient. From beautiful fingerpicking to your best pedal steel impersonations, the immediate attack is welcome and satiating.
This guitar also packs a secret weapon. Pickups-in-series is unlocked by putting the 4-way pickup selector all the way in the forward position. This creates a humbucker, albeit with the coils spread apart. The tones here are thick and alluring. From fat leads to chunky rhythms, this weapon is fully ready to engage.
How Does It Play?
The string action is low without buzz. Just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E. The neck is Mario’s “Classic C,” which measures a moderate .830/.900.” The fingerboard edges are nicely rolled and the fret ends perfectly rounded.
