Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Josh Think?
We know you’re looking for the weight so let’s just come right out and say it… 5lb 3oz!!! This 1-piece Paulownia body T-Style features a roasted maple neck, which lightens it by that last couple ounces and also prevents the guitar from being neck heavy. And that’s not just any roasted maple. It’s AAA-grade flame, thank you very much.
The Fralin pickup set is just the thing to coax heavyweight tones out of this featherweight instrument. The bridge pickup leans heavily into the fundamental of the note, which makes it perfect for old school chicken’ picking and rockabilly riffing. This quality also serves it well with a bit of gain engaged on your amp… roll back the tone knob and you get very convincing humbucker bridge tones.
The neck position is warm and bluesy. It’s a gutsy, fat neck tone that ain’t afraid to bark. And the middle position is a perfect blend of the two. I find it to be thicker than most middle Tele positions and to good effect, breathing out a rich low register while retaining that signature stringy snap in the upper registers.
How Does It Play?
This is Mario’s Chunky C neck, but don’t let the name fool you. It is one of the easiest-playing necks you’ve every laid hands on. Round, yes. But perfectly proportioned to match its 1.65” nut width. The fretboard is a modern 9.5-12” compound radius which lets you bend to your heart’s content without buzz. The string action is right where we like it, with action at the 12th measuring just over 4/64” on the low E and under 4/64” on the high E.
