What Do We Think?

The 1-pc Swamp Ash body is the perfect platform for the Budz Purebred pickup set. Combined with a maple neck, the resulting tonal cocktail is evenly-balanced and open. The neck pickup has a bell-like attack and big, percussive low end. It has just enough scoop to deliver some real spank through a clean amp. Overdriven tones summon a deep vowel characteristic that keeps you coming back for more.

The bridge is “big” more than it is brash, maintaining really strong body in the lows and rolling off the top end slightly, just right for big rhythm chords and blues-inspired country leads. With soft pick attack this position still sounds large and robust, and with heavier attack it goes after the preamp section of your amp with delightful urgency and dynamic range. This is a bridge pickup that handles gain just as well as cleans.

How Does It Play?

This guitar sets up at a fantastically-low 4/64” on the low E at the 12^th fret and 3/64” on the high E. No fretbuzz. Mario’s “Chunky C” neck profile is extremely accessible, barely chunky in our opinion. Mario also has the back sanded down just right to wear it in and take off the sheen and stickiness of the gloss nitro finish.
