Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
Generous top end that never feels harsh. Sweet, round midrange without the mud. And a warm, punchy bottom end. Every note you play rings bold but clear, leaving room for a beautiful sum of the parts when playing multi-note leads and full chords. The Lollar El Rayos are the perfect pickup choice for this guitar.
Playing the guitar close to the bridge lends you some tight Jazzmaster tones, but you’re going to get those in equal measure with the thickness of the humbucking pickups. Think JM meets your favorite Les Paul. Feel free to go straight from surf rock riffage to big chords with gain. We had loads of fun through a Plexi voiced amp.
The Mastery bridge and Bigsby vibrato combination is a tough one to beat as well. It rides smooth and sounds lively and shimmery. The 1-piece AAA flame roasted maple neck is fitted with stainless steel frets, yet doesn’t lose its vintage feel or warmth. And it’s a darn nice piece to look at. Other premium features on this guitar include locking tuners and contoured neck heel.
How Does It Play?
The guitar sets up with string action measuring barely a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E. No fret buzz. The fretboard edges are rolled, the frets dressed smooth and the ends nicely rounded, and the medium C neck profile is fast in the hand.
