Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This is a Jazzmaster for the rock ‘n’ roll at heart. It sports a swamp ash body with thunderous low end, and the nice upper midrange peak of the Lollar Imperials. The top end is smooth, even rolled off. We plugged into a Dr. Z NOVA and the result was pure magic. The neck position brings lots of warmth and soul to the table. The bridge position has the bite and snarl. The middle position is deep but glassy.
The Staytrem modified tremolo features a snug collet and pop-in tremolo arm that won’t fall out no matter how much stage real estate you are covering. The Staytrem bridge gives you nice Mustang-style barrel saddles without the slop. Tuning stability is excellent, helped along by Gotoh staggered post tuners and Mario’s stringtree-free headstock design.
The Coke Bottle Green Flake finish is one of our favorites. The flake sizes are large enough to really dance under the light. The quarter sawn roasted maple neck features Mario’s Chunky C+ profile, which is our personal favorite of the bunch. Don’t let the name fool you; while it is full and supportive, it is far from unwieldy.
How Does It Play?
Set up just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and well under on the high E, this guitar plays nice and easy without buzz. The gloss finish on the back of the neck, while not completely removed, has been dulled to a perfectly smooth and effortless feel.
