Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
Styled after a mid- to late-50s “whiteguard” telecaster but with staggered pole pieces, this Swamp Ash darling weighs in at just 6lbs 4oz. The David Budz pickup set is wound and built with the materials, wire gauge, coating and procedure of the great pickups from the 50’s. This set features a mixture of Alnico 5, 4, and 3 magnets in the bridge pickup and Alnico 5 magnets in the neck.
The result is a bridge pickup that is open, almost airy, with medium output and a large dynamic range on tap. The neck pickup is a bit moodier, producing lush chord textures and rich single note lines. The middle position is bright and sparkly, perfect for bringing a duller amp to life or making your rhythm parts stand up in a mix. This position also sounds remarkable in front of a loaded effects rack or pedalboard.
All pickup positions handle gain very nicely. The middle strings maintain a beautiful vocal quality and the upper strings retain clarity and definition without being overly present. The bottom end has a nice, full bark that balances out the entire register. Across a variety of needs, this guitar really delivers.
How Does It Play?
We have this guitar set up a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and right at 3/64” on the high E. No fretbuzz whatsoever. This one features a Barely V neck profile. The name really says it all. It doesn’t immediately strike you as a V, but as you settle in you begin to appreciate the way it sits in the palm of your hand just right. This is a great profile for the player seeking the middle ground between a larger-shouldered C profile and a distinct V. Mario also has the back sanded down just right to wear it in and take off the sheen and stickiness of the gloss nitro finish.
