Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
We are in love with this Fralin pickup combination in the one-piece swamp ash body. The Alnico 5 magnets in the Blues Special (neck) and Stock 2% Overwind (bridge) have a beautiful midrange punch that perfectly fills the space between the natural low end and upper sparkle of swamp ash. True to its name, the neck pickup will deliver killer blues tone in front of an edge-of-breakup amp or overdrive pedal. Clean it up a little for great Strat-influenced neck tones.
Don’t be afraid to lay into higher lines like “Heaven” by Los Lonely Boys. Even on the bridge pickup, the highs are rolled off just enough to make the entire neck your playground. A touch of natural compression smooths out any unwanted spikes, with no loss of clarity. And all with a well-supported bottom end. The bridge position also loves overdrives and delivers beefy single-note lead lines on demand.
The middle position has gorgeous sparkle on top and clean body on bottom. This position conveys your bass notes and melody parts with equal distinction, great for Chet-style playing or good old wide-open chords encompassing all strings. Not a dull spot on the neck. Every position feels effortless and even.
How Does It Play?
This one sets up at a remarkable 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E, without buzz. The Chunky C neck profile is very accessible, measuring around .860” at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th with nice shoulders. For frame of reference, Mario has a Chunky C+ and a C++ in the lineup before getting into baseball bat territory.
If you’re coming from the Gibson camp, it will feel somewhat like a ’59 roundback at the nut but will stay more moderate as you approach the 12th. However you want to describe it, this is a great feeling one-piece maple neck and Mario has knocked down the gloss on the back to give it a perfect worn-in feel.
