This guitar is a floor model that received a small ding on the back of the neck and a pair on the edge of the fretboard. These have been filled perfectly smooth by the best at Joe Glaser’s shop here in town. You probably know the name from the Glaser B-Bender / G-Bender. The neck plays exactly as before and we have made sure to photograph the spots that were touched up. We are offering the guitar at a substantial discount accordingly. With a metallic flake finish upcharge, front and back body binding, upgraded Stay Trem bridge and tremolo collet, and roasted maple 1-pc neck, this build MAPs for $3600 with an MSRP of $4000. We’re knocking over 15% off MAP to make it a clean $3000.
Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Ivey Think?
Starting in position one. The Fralin 2% overwound Stock bridge pickup takes on a darker, moodier voice with the Stay Trem bridge and Jazzmaster tremolo. It still has some of that vintage tele percussion but comes with a woodier, warmer upper midrange and less scoop in the frequency response. It loves overdrives and maintains a rich tonality with a good bite.
In the standard middle position, you come into a nice quacky tone. Not Stratocaster territory, but a great place to find some good spank for funky rhythm parts and some gorgeous note separation for clean arpeggios and chord work. And no surprise, but the neck position is Jazzmaster all the way. The Fralin Jazzmaster pickup even has a little bit of hollowbody quality if you play your tone knob just right.
And in the fourth position you have both pickups wired in series, like a spread apart humbucker. The tones in this position are very percussive, almost compressed. It serves as a little bit of a boost from the other positions and packs a real punch for single note lines that won’t get lost in a mix.
How Does It Play?
Right at 4/32” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E. It doesn’t get better than that. Mario guitars are dialed in perfectly by the builders. We’re just 30 miles up the road from them so we have the privilege of stopping by to pick these fine instruments up in person. But we still do our due diligence here at the shop just as on every other guitar we sell, making sure we are familiar with the guitar on a personal level and giving one more test of every component and a final check on the setup before shipping.
Also worth noting, this guitar features a Stay Trem bridge, tremolo arm and collet! The Stay Trem arm and collet design keeps the tremolo arm from falling out of the unit and also removes that annoying play or wiggle, providing a responsive touch instead. The tremolo also locks out in case you don’t want any pitch shifting whatsoever.
